BDP is mandated to work in Nakuru County and specifically in the sub-county of Naivasha. Naivasha is a scenic town of the Rift Valley Province. In its surroundings are picturesque tourism sites and hosts a rich ecological environment. First is Lake Naivasha which is the highest fresh water Lake in the Rift Valley. The Lake is fed by two perennial rivers, Rivers Malewa and Gilgil, but has no known outlet. It is thus speculated that it has an underground outflow which is what helps keep it as a fresh water lake. The Lake is also home to two other lakes, Oloiden and Sonachi, the latter being of a dark green hue. This gives it the nickname of the ‘green crater lake.’
In Naivasha is Mt Longonot, a dormant volcanic mountain on the Rift Valley floor. Cutting across the town is the Great Rift Valley. Naivasha has a varied ecosystem. It is categorized as an Arid and Semi Arid Land (ASAL) being semi-arid on one end and yet hosts some of the most important water towers in Kenya such as the vast Abadare forest. Naivasha supports one of the world’s largest varieties of bird species and there are hundreds of wildlife species in various parts of this amazing sub-county.
