BDP has a unique approach to agroforestry and agri-business where the Project seeks to improve community livelihoods within schools and in households by introducing drought resistant trees as well as herb and spice shrubs which do better in the semi-arid environment in Naivasha. This helps the community to move away from traditional crops such as maize which fail often due to poor rainfall in the region, a trend that aggravates poverty in the area.Utilizing funding from donors and well wishers, BDP is ready to upscale the green environment and income generating initiatives to individual Projects that will engage more participants in the planting of fast-maturing trees. Such trees include the Tea Tree and herbs used for the extraction of essential oils. These trees and shrubs on maturity produce raw materials for the extraction of essential oils. BDP would move the raw materials to the buying companies on behalf of the farmer.
BDP also trains youth groups and vulnerable households especially women, in harvesting leaves and flowers of wild trees such as the Leleshwa, leaves and berries of the Schinus Molle (pepper tree) for extraction of essential oils. The farmer benefits by becoming a producer of the raw materials which BDP then sells to the buying companies, pays the farmer for the raw materials, and in this way improves the annual income in benefitting households and schools.
